Introducing NightLase® – A Non-Surgical Snoring Treatment

Available in Palm Desert from Bittner Dental

Are you, or someone you love, troubled or even incapacitated by constriction of air intake due to a narrow airway or large tongue? If you are, we know you must be experiencing all the affects of Sleep Apnea:

• excessive snoring,
• a cessation of breathing for long periods of time, and
• constant waking due to choking for lack of air.

Bittner Dental is pleased to offer to those who are experiencing these life threatening symptoms NightLase® — a procedure that uses a laser to tighten and shrink the uvula, soft palate and surrounding tissues to increase air intake and reduce snoring and associated effects of Sleep Apnea.

How Does NightLase® Work?

NightLase® results in tightening and firming the muscles in the airway by causing contraction of collagen in the tissues that have been lasered. This procedure has been used for years in other tissue rejuvenation disciplines including vaginal and facial, but has only recently been applied to oral solutions. The procedure is simple and non-invasive. There’s no cutting or anesthesia, just a warming sensation as the laser gently pulses and creates the desired collagen restructuring effect. The only side effect is a scratchy throat for 24 to 48 hours, similar to the throat irritation caused by the beginning of a cold or an allergy. Other than drinking plenty of water, no other changes to your routine are needed.

OK, How Do I Get Started?

Following a simple sleep study (yes, they can be done in the comfort of your own home), initial NightLase® therapy typically consists of three sessions over six weeks, with each session spaced 21 days apart.

• Most patients experience an improvement the night of their first session.
• Maximum results are typically seen after the completion of the third session.
• Over 80% of patients notice a significant reduction in the intensity, duration, and frequency of their snoring.

Like all laser-tightening therapies, results fade after some time and touch up sessions are required to maintain results. This is actually one of the greatest benefits of NightLase® therapy – unlike surgery, no irreversible changes are made to the throat. A single touch up session is most often done 12 to 18 months following initial therapy.

Before and After NightLase®

For a closer look at the throat, before and after NightLase®, the diagram below depicts an important portion of the upper airway. The closer the soft palate gets to the tongue, the smaller the airway at this point and the greater potential for snoring.

A high Mallampati score (class III or IV) is associated with a higher incidence of snoring and sleep apnea. The goal of NightLase® therapy is to increase airway size here and decrease tissue turbulence. Lowering your Mallampati score tends to decrease or eliminate snoring (and potentially Sleep Apnea) and would be considered successful treatment.
